The Garrison Over 60’s Spiel was formed in 2003 when the new club was built to fill the gap between Boxing Day and New Year’s. At that time other clubs had Christmas Spiels but nothing that was for the 60 and over crowd. In those days it was unique in that every team plays 6 games in 4 days, and teams won money for their wins only. There were no playoffs and no bragging rights! These days players only need to be 50+ and the event is two days long, still held between Christmas and New Year`s.
In 2007 the spiel was renamed the “Ray Tull Memorial Over 60 Spiel.” Ray’s widow sponsored this event up until her death in 2012 and the family decided to continue this sponsorship.
Ray was born on January 27, 1924, on a farm near Prague, Oklahoma. He worked extremely hard all his life, first on the farm, and then on the oil rigs, which eventually brought him to Alberta in 1949. Ray went on to own and operate Canbridge Drilling Ltd. which he sold in 1970 when he formed Tull Exploration, and he retired completely in the late 1980′s.
His greatest joys in life were his family, golf, and curling. Upon retiring he continued his passion for golf and curling with the same vigour and total commitment that he spent on any endeavour that he pursued. Ray represented Alberta at the Canadian Curling Championships, three times at Seniors and five times at Masters, winning the Masters in 1988.
Ray will be greatly missed by those at the Calgary Golf and Country Club, the Garrison Curling Club and various other curling clubs around Calgary. Ray passed away while curling at the Garrison. His family and friends take comfort in knowing that he was curling “right to the end”.
